Understated Elegance: The Strategic Use of Natural Stone and Living Elements

3 min read

The success of a high-end hospitality environment often rests on the tactile relationship between the guest and the space. In the development of Hilton Gurugram Baani City Centre, the material palette was curated to evoke a sense of permanence and organic warmth. By moving away from synthetic finishes, Bobby Mukherrji Architects utilized a composition of stone, wood, and living nature to ground the building’s modern geometry. This project serves as a premier example of high end design, where the “luxury” is found in the honesty and origin of the materials themselves.

The Living Core

At the heart of the design narrative is a triple-height atrium that houses an ancient, 600-year-old olive tree. This living monument defines the spirit of the hotel, re-rooted to stand as the emotional center of the interior design. Surrounded by soft natural light from frosted skylights, he trees cast shifting patterns of light and shadow that transform throughout the day. This integration of a centuries-old natural centerpiece reflects the firm’s commitment to award-winning design that values emotional comfort as much as visual impact.

Using Travertine and Alabaster

The lobby experience is defined by the juxtaposition of massive, raw textures and soft, ethereal light. A feature wall of Roman travertine provides a sense of monumental stature, while a custom-backlit alabaster surface introduces a warm radiance into the reception area. As a leading Mumbai design studio, the firm used these materials to create a sense of scale that is grand yet intimate. The interaction between the matte stone and the glowing alabaster ensures that the arrival experience feels both prestigious and welcoming.

A Synthesis of Craft and Texture

Beyond the primary stone surfaces, the interiors are layered with wood veneers, brushed metal, and woven rattan accents. These material choices were intentionally soft to the touch, creating an environment that feels personal. Mediterranean influences in the dining areas and Japanese-inspired screens in the lounge areas add cultural depth without cluttering the spatial flow. This disciplined approach to luxury interior design ensures that every surface contributes to a cohesive, high-end sensory experience.

The Evolution of Authentic Luxury

By prioritizing material honesty, the project achieves a sense of understated elegance that bypasses passing trends. The use of regional carpets and handcrafted furniture further anchors the building to its location, while imported elements like the travertine provide a global aesthetic edge. This project solidifies the studio’s reputation as a top interior design studio in India, capable of blending diverse material narratives into a singular, world-class expression of hospitality.
