Curating Material Memory: The Art of Palace Restoration

The restoration of the Taj Usha Kiran Palace is a study in tactility and respect for the past. Bobby Mukherrji Architects focused on reviving textures and restoring lineage-rich details to ensure that every material used tells a story of Gwalior’s royal history. By choosing to curate a material memory, the design team has created an environment that feels deeply connected to its cultural roots.

Restoring Authentic Foundations 

The design centers on the preservation of original elements that define the palace’s character. The original Kota stone flooring was meticulously restored within themed suites to maintain the authentic feel of the estate. Intricate wood and stone carvings were treated with great care, ensuring that the interior design of the past remains visible and vibrant for modern guests.

A Fusion of Tradition and New Craft 

While many elements were restored, newly commissioned pieces were designed to carry the same cultural tone. Signature brass chandeliers, hand-cast by traditional artisans in Moradabad, were introduced to serve as functional art pieces. These elements reflect the luxury interior design required for a project of this scale, where new additions must feel as though they have always belonged to the palace.

Soft Layers of Regal Luxury 

To complement the stone and metal, the interiors were enriched with handwoven textiles and layered silks. Brocades and artisan rugs were chosen to bring a sense of warmth and regal softness to the large, historic volumes. This focus on textile heritage highlights the bespoke craftsmanship and attention to detail that defines a project managed by a hospitality design studio.
