This project, the masterplan for a modern city, marked a pivotal moment for Bobby Mukherrji Architects. Mukherji secured the project through a design competition, demonstrating superiority in urban design thinking for a conglomerate's vast township near Pune city. The design was the outcome of intensive work and a powerful collaboration with Gruen Associates, a legacy Los Angeles-based firm renowned for quality architecture and master-planning.
Mukherji single-handedly oversaw this highly prestigious large-scale development in India, which holds the distinction of being the largest undertaken by a private enterprise since the planned city of Chandigarh. The expansive 10,000-acre sprawl was planned as an exclusive, integrated resort city, containing solely villas and private residences. The design successfully achieved a massive landscape transformation, converting arid terrain into a lush, highly vegetated environment featuring three major manmade lakes. The entire urban masterplan defines seven distinct 'villages' or precincts, each thoughtfully detailed with neat sidewalks, wide infrastructure, and extensive landscaped areas.
The infrastructure scope includes a PGA golf course, a small airport and heliport, and a central nightclub situated on a lake island. Aamby Valley City set a robust, powerful benchmark for high-quality, luxury residential planning and elevated the standard of living achievable through thoughtful private enterprise masterplan in India.
