As part of the Delhi Government’s initiative to uplift major thoroughfares to international standards, the Nelson Mandela Marg streetscaping project was undertaken by Bobby Mukherrji Architects in partnership with Design Forum International. The goal was transforming oft-neglected areas into meaningful urban spaces that encourage people engagement.
The initial phase, stretching a few kilometers long, served as a prototype. The road's median was identified as a key area for refurbishment. Native Babul trees that flourished there were retained and paired with flowering plants, lawns, and large palms. The latter were strategically illuminated to add drama to the continuous vista. Similar plantation along the sides of the roads softened their edges, while new sidewalks and bicycle tracks enhanced safety and pleasure for walking and cycling. A bridge that formed a part of this stretch was also designed and decorated.
The second phase proposed bookending the rejuvenated streetscape with imposing statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. It also sought to transform the portion abutting a shopping district into a plaza, complete with lawns, tree cover, and streetlights.
