This commission marks Bobby Mukherrji Architects’s significant return to the US architecture market, following its diverse portfolio delivered between 1997 and 2003. This assignment involved the exhaustive overhaul of the former Hotel on Rivington, establishing a towering, gleaming presence among the LES (Lower East Side) bohemian low-rises. Aesthetically, The Favor of Rivington now follows the mantra of understated elegance, scripting a narrative that is both upbeat and urbane. Bespoke, expertly crafted details, including interior accessories, floor coverings, lighting fixtures, art, and furniture, feature a chic mid-century New York aesthetic. This creates a nuanced, immersive environment designed to attract a sophisticated, affluent New York audience that frequents the best names in hospitality and entertainment nearby.
The spatial highlight remains the fantastic New York City skyline: showcasing One World Trade Center, the Empire State Building, and the midtown vista. The dark, walnut-floored guest rooms and suites celebrate this vantage point through floor-to-ceiling glass facades and large terraces in the suites, which function as extensions for outdoor gatherings. A key design strategy that elevates the panoramic views is the use of transparent glass study tables installed against the windows. This move creates a poised, mid-air feeling, allowing for an uninterrupted contemplation of the illuminated New York skyline. Lighting in the private guest spaces utilizes special attention to bespoke details, such as alabaster bedside lights, which establish an edgy, moody environment. This project sets a new standard for luxury hotel design in Manhattan.
